Cozumel Island and Cancun

The Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya is a stretch of Caribbean coastline on Mexico’s northeastern Yucatán Peninsula. It’s known for its numerous all-inclusive resorts, such as those in the city of Playa del Carmen, and its long beaches. To the south, Tulum is home to yoga retreats and the preserved ruins of an ancient Mayan port city, perched above a beach.

Cancún, a Mexican city on the Yucatán Peninsula bordering the Caribbean Sea, is known for its beaches, numerous resorts and energetic nightlife. It’s composed of 2 distinct areas: the more traditional downtown area, El Centro, and Zona Hotelera, a long, beachfront strip of high-rise hotels, nightclubs, shops and restaurants. Cancun is also a famed destination for students during college’s spring break period.

Cozumel, a mostly undeveloped Mexican island in the Caribbean Sea, is a popular cruise ship port of call famed for its scuba diving. At Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, divers can explore a section of the Mesoamerican Reef and Museo Subacuático de Arte’s submerged sculptures. Chankanaab is an eco park surrounding a lagoon with underwater caverns, home to dolphins, manatees and sea turtles.

How best to see the region?

There are plenty of flights to the region from major US Airport Hubs and Cruise Ships depart from ports in Florida and Texas.  This short summer season is a sweet spot for visiting Cozumel: You’ll avoid the hurricane season and score a great hotel deal along the main thoroughfare in San Miguel. Plus, droves of sea turtles make their nests on the island in the summer, so this time of year is perfect for nature enthusiasts.

Consider a Caribbean Cruise that makes port calls in the Yucatan; you get to see more destinations, never have to pack or unpack, and the journey itself becomes a relaxing part of your vacation.
